Peripherally, Jefferson was aware that Cleocatra wasn’t happy with him.

She was racing around them in half-circles, jumping at his legs, trying to get his attention, and meowing incessantly.

That was all background noise though because all of Jefferson’s attention was on Kate.

Glorious Kate, of the absolutely sinful mouth, who had sent all thoughts fleeing his head with a single lick of her tongue.

He’d felt that tiny swipe of her tongue, then the scrape of her teeth and he’d completely lost his mind.

But what a glorious way to go.

The woman was simply luscious and Jefferson couldn’t get enough of her.

The taste of her, the scent of her arousal, the feel of her under his hands, the sexy aggression she showed as she shoved him against the windows, all of it combined to shred his thoughts and bring his blood to boiling.

A yowl sounded from a distance followed by a crash and Kate jerked away from him with a roar.

It took Jefferson a moment to catch his breath and from there a couple more moments to realize what had happened.

The Bear Necessities Station was still upright, but several platters of goodies had fallen to the floor and Cleocatra was firmly attached to Kate’s head.

“What is up with your kitten?” Kate growled as she tried to remove Cleocatra’s claws from her scalp.

Into this chaos, Maggie arrived. “Catnapper!” She shouted at Jefferson as she stormed over to the Bear Necessities Station where Genghis Khat was sniffing at all the treats that had landed on the floor.

Maggie swept him into her arms. “Don’t worry, baby, we’re going to the diner where we’ll get you some treats that haven’t been dumped on the floor.”

Genghis Khat sprawled across her arms like a king in his throne and looked as content as Jefferson had ever seen him.

“Why are you wearing that kitten as a hat?” Maggie demanded, staring at Kate, who had apparently given up trying to extract the kitten’s claws and was now petting her.

Jefferson wasn’t sure Kate was aware that she was petting Cleocatra nor was he certain the kitten knew that her growls were starting to sound more like purrs. Still, he figured he should probably refrain from pointing out the waning of hostilities.

“I’m not wearing the kitten as a hat,” Kate informed Maggie. “The kitten’s wearing me as a person.”

“But why?”

Kate shrugged. “Who knows? She’s a kitten. She’s probably got all kinds of kitteny thoughts we’ll never understand.”

Nick cleared his throat and Jefferson froze.

Dear shifter gods, he’d forgotten about the wolf.

Had he been there the entire time?

One glance at the grin on the wolf’s face and Jefferson was sure the answer was yes. At least the wolf was standing in the doorway to the storage area, so maybe he’d been in there part of the time at least.

“I told you,” Nick said. “The kitten’s been warning you for days, ‘Hands off my man.’ You failed to listen and now you’re paying the price.”

“Must you always be right, Nick?” Kate demanded.

“What can I say? It’s my specialty.
